A hidden speakeasy is supposed to feel like a secret, but what happens when your reel hits hundreds of thousands of views and the comments turn into a full-on debate? I’m Jared, and I’m talking through the most unexpected wave of momentum I’ve had since starting Cookin With Gas: two Southeast Michigan speakeasy walkthroughs that suddenly took off on Instagram and Facebook, bringing in new followers, nonstop questions, and plenty of people mad that “their spot” might get popular.

I break down what I’m actually doing when I share these places and why I’m not “ruining” anything. I also get into the practical side of content creation, including how I film with Meta AI glasses so I can capture the entrance and the vibe without shoving a phone in everyone’s face, then still enjoy the night like a normal person.

Then we go to the darker, weirder side of going viral: entitlement in the comments, bots, and people accusing real bars of being AI. I talk about moderating hate, keeping the community fun, and using the noise as fuel instead of letting it derail the whole point, sharing great places to go in Detroit and beyond. You’ll also hear what’s next, including a VIP soft opening invite and how this momentum connects to my movie work with Woodward Cinema.

If you like speakeasies, nightlife, cocktail bars, and the real story behind social media growth, hit play, subscribe, and share this with a friend who always asks “What are we doing this weekend?” Then leave a review and tell me: do you think creators help local spots or hurt them?

Welcome And What’s Going On

SPEAKER_00

Yo what is up, everyone Jared here, cooking with gas podcast. Real excited. Got a lot to talk about in this episode. For any new listeners out there, I appreciate you. Thank you so much. I really have no idea what's going on right now, but a lot is going on, and I'm gonna talk about all of it in this episode. So if you're a new listener, thank you very much for tuning in. Get at me on all my social media accounts. You can message me on the actual podcast website if you want to send me a message. You can shoot me an email, follow me on Instagram, Cooking With Gas Podcast, follow me on Facebook, follow me on X. The X handle is at CWG Podcast, but I am mainly rocking out on Instagram and Facebook. And let me tell you what is happening on those two platforms right now for me is something that I never thought would ever occur. And I have only the people out there right now to thank. I cannot thank everyone enough for what's happening because I did not see this coming. Let's just say I really, really enjoy going and finding unique places and unique things to do. Now you'll say, well, who doesn't, right? Who doesn't like to go out and have a good time? Well, you'd be surprised how many people like to sit at home. And to be honest with you, I like to sit at home too. I'm not going out to all these bars, having a great time, doing a bunch of crazy wild things. But I do like to do unique things that a lot of people might not know are even happening or even exist.

Why Hidden Speakeasies Became The Focus

SPEAKER_00

And that's what this podcast right here is going to be about. Because over the past couple years, I'll even say, I have been seeking out hidden speakeasies in many different locations, not just here in my home state of Michigan. I have been doing it all the way over in Las Vegas, and I've been finding these places, filming some content, having great times while I'm there, and putting some of that content out for others to see. Now, over the past two weeks, I have went to two separate hidden speakeasies that are located here in the southeast Michigan area. And out of nowhere, these places have absolutely blown up on my social media. I don't know what entails going viral because truthfully, I'm not some social media savant. That's just not what I am or who I am. I know that when you're doing a podcast, this day and age, you have to be able to promote yourself, you have to be able to do unique things, and you have to be able to get yourself out there. And that's what you do. You get on social media, you promote yourself the best you can. What you do also is you post, post, post.

Refusing To Box The Podcast In

SPEAKER_00

Now, when I started this podcast, I was told by everyone, a lot of people, you're doing too many things, Jared. You can't talk about sports, you can't talk about movies, you can't do movie reviews, and and you can't talk about it's speakeasies or or Vegas. You have to have one thing. You have to have one thing on your podcast. That way you pull in one audience. Well, needless to say, I told every single one of them I appreciate their advice, but that's not how I was gonna roll. Not one bit. I am way too all over the place to have a podcast that focuses on just one thing. I love a lot of things, like most people. And that does fall into the of course, movies, entertainment. I do a ton of movie reviews, the hid and speakeasy, lifestyle content, restaurants, bars, places to go, and things to do, concerts, venues, uh, sports, of course, big huge sports fan. So I talk about sports. There was no way that I was going to put myself in a box. It wasn't going to happen. And I knew that if I stuck with it, that at some point in time I would get a little bit of guidance, whether it was coming from just the gods or coming from somebody who moves me in a direction, or even just myself. And it just so happened that it was myself. I have created now, which feels great because I put a lot of work into the content that I put out there for people, whether it's on this podcast or on my social media. And people that may not be uh doing something like this in their life might think it's super easy to sit in front of a microphone and just talk and then and then throw yourself out there on social media. Truthfully, I even thought that before I started doing it, and it

Fear Of Judgment And Using Hate

SPEAKER_00

is not. One of my biggest fears before this podcast even started, what, about eight months ago, was putting myself out there. Uh putting yourself in a position to, well, let's just say it, be judged and be hated. And let me tell you, the content that I'm putting out right now, which is fun, lighthearted, uh, great times for everyone type of content, there the haters come out of the woodwork. It's it's actually impressive. No matter what you do in life, you are going to have haters. There are going to be people that want to see you fail and tear you down and comment on your things and say that you're stupid or you're doing things wrong. I could be curing cancer. And there'd still be somebody that tells me, Well, now you're taking money away from the pharmaceutical industry. My mom works for this the pharmaceutical industry. You're curing cancer. She's gonna be out of a job. I mean, why are you saving all those puppies from that burning building? Now we're gonna have to find them homes. So no matter what you do and how good you are, you're gonna have people out there that are gonna hate your shit. And all that I'm going to do with their hate is use it as fuel. Keep bringing it. Okay? I I'm not here for your hate at all. I'd much rather all of us be getting along and helping each other out and putting out content for each other that we all just enjoy. But you're never gonna get that. You're always gonna have these people that wanna see you fail and fall. Well, keep bringing the hate. Alright? I'm gonna use it, I'm gonna use it like Doc Brown uses all the trash that he puts in the DeLorean to make that bitch fly, because I am taking this straight to the moon. Let me tell you.

How I Film Speakeasy Walkthroughs

SPEAKER_00

So lately what I have been doing is I've been going to these hidden speakeasies. Now, let me remind people about speakeasies, okay? And the word hidden. We do live now in 2026. This isn't the 1920s, people, okay? I'm not giving away any secrets. You can find every single one of these places on Google if you just did a little bit of research. So I'm not finding these places that are literally hidden, they are, and it's awesome. I'm not giving away secrets. Actually, what I'm doing is I'm helping small businesses generate more business, which can help that business thrive and keep its doors open. Also, if they get more business, it helps their employees. You know, a lot of these places, obviously, bartenders, waitresses, waiters, they live off of tips. I would assume when these places get busier because of content like myself or anybody else that's making and it gets popular, and people say, man, I want to go there, that's good for business. Now, if you don't want your business to thrive, I don't know what to tell you. I don't know why you're an owner of a business if you don't want your business to thrive. But what I'm doing is I'm just going around, I'm finding these hidden speakeasies, I'm filming on my meta AI glasses, which are absolute lifesavers because I don't have to walk around with my phone out like a wild animal. I throw my glasses on, I I hit the record button and I just walk. I walk from where I'm going and showing people how to get into these speakeasies. Sometimes they're hidden behind bookcases, walls, sometimes they're hidden behind just a simple door in an alley. Sometimes they can be almost right in front of your face and you just don't know they're there. They could be literally uh some types of uh puzzles that you might have to solve in order to get in them. Now, this is where a lot of people, wait a minute, man, you're giving away the secrets. Uh now everyone's gonna go find this place. Way to go, asshole. Like, first, first, shut up. Are you serious with that right now? Like I said, every single one of these places is online and there are multiple reels and multiple people that have filmed themselves going in these places. What do you how do you think I find out about it? You do you think I'm in like the underground speakeasy mafia? Maybe I am. So you might want to watch what you say in my comments. But no, I'm not. So these speakeasies are they're easy in a way to do research on. You just gotta find them. You gotta do the work. So that's what I do. And then I go around and I I create this content and I put it out on my social media. Now I have done this for a while. Like I said, I used to go, I I still go to Vegas all the time, and I frequent the speakeasies that are in Vegas, which are absolutely just amazing in Vegas. Now, the ones that I've been to in Michigan, I'll be honest, they're on point with the ones that I've been in in Vegas. Vegas is just Vegas, everything is bigger, everything is wilder. So the feeling and the vibe might be a little different, obviously, when you're in Vegas. But what the ones in Michigan that I have been to have been spectacular. I cannot do anything but rave about them. And the people obviously like it as well. Because my social media has exploded.

Going Viral And Helping Small Businesses

SPEAKER_00

I never in a million years would have thought that the content that I'd be putting out about these speakeasies would generate so many views, so many likes, so many comments, so many people in the comments tagging people, saying, We have to go here, this looks so awesome. Uh, I wanna I want you guys to come in the town so I can take you guys here. That is what I'm here for. I am not here for the idiots who are in my comments, which I will get to. I will read you some of the actual comments that I get from people. Now, some of them are understandable. Uh, you get people who just flat out they want the answers quickly and they don't want to do the work. So you'll get people in the comments that just ask, what are their hours? Or uh do they serve food? What are the drink prices? Now I will say I'm very active on my social media and I try to answer everyone's question. I all the time I can't. I got hundreds on top of hundreds of comments on these reels that I'm putting out on both Instagram and Facebook. And it's hard for me to keep up with commenting on every single one. I appreciate everyone putting their comments in there, tagging their friends or their family. I appreciate the likes, uh, the shares. I mean, the shares are where it's at. The shares are what generate that hype. And listen, that's what this is about. It's not like every single one of these people is gonna go there at one time and you're not gonna be able to get in. But if the business is gonna thrive off of what I'm doing, I feel good about that. I feel good about generating business for a small Michigan establishment. I actually, after my first reel, got a phone call or a request to have a phone call with the owner of the restaurant and speakeasy. He wanted to talk to me personally, not only to thank me about how the reel was doing online, but to request that we actually collaborate more in the future. And that is where I say, I'm so glad that I didn't just put myself in some corner like a lot of people were telling me to do and focus on just talking about sports or just talking about movies. No, I'm not gonna do that to myself. I'm gonna be real, I'm gonna be true to myself and the way that I feel. And this podcast, if I feel like sitting down and talking about speakeasies, a restaurant, I want to do a movie review or talk about sports, all of those things are popular things. And if somebody doesn't want to listen to one of my episodes because they're not necessarily interested in what I'm talking about, they have absolutely every power to not do that. And they can move on to the next one, or they can stop listening to me altogether. Of course, I need and I want the listeners, but at the same time, I enjoy doing this for me. I enjoy sitting here in this studio and talking. I would love to actually have somebody else in here, have a co-host at times so we can talk talk off of one another. That that would be a great thing too. But at the same time, I'm great at working alone. I have a blast doing this. And the fact that I can go out on a weekend, still enjoy myself. I don't sit here and spend all my time recording a bunch of stuff. Uh, with those glasses, I hit record, I walk in, I lay get a lay of the land, I see what's going on, I might record it one more time, and then I'm done. And then I'm enjoying myself. I'm having a couple cocktails and we're having a good time. And I'm always thinking, what's the next thing that I can give the people out there that they're gonna want? That is one thing about this. I am always thinking about what's the one thing or the next thing that somebody's gonna say, hey, that's pretty cool. I enjoy and I'm passionate about the fact that I can go to some of these places that people have no idea about. And then when they scroll through some of their social media, they may see my reel. And if they have nothing to do that weekend, they're like, This looks awesome. All right, let's go. And they go out and they have a good time with their friends and their family. I feel great about that. I feel great about giving people ideas for things to do. I feel great about helping small businesses who wouldn't, right? And I can't lie, I would absolutely love to collaborate with these businesses. And moving forward, that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm gonna use these reels, I'm gonna show the people or owners or anybody else out there who wants to see them the likes, the views, the shares that this can generate, and how much business it can bring in for them or their company, and we'll see what happens.

Toxic Comments And Moderating The Feed

SPEAKER_00

Now, there are a lot of things that are in these comments that just make me shake my head. As I said before in this, there are just some people out there who they just want to see the world burn. They hate life, and they just I feel like they hate me. So let's just get into a couple things.

Accused Of AI And Fake Content

SPEAKER_00

People, you would be surprised how many people don't even believe that this is real. I get mad amounts of comments or even DMs telling me that I'm putting out fake content, this is AI, and it doesn't exist. AI has up so much stuff on the internet in the world as a whole, that people don't even believe real stuff when it's sitting right there in front of their face. And that's pretty sad because no, nothing that I'm putting out there has any AI in it. I can promise you that. I am not that computer savvy to where I can make a video AI look like that. It would never happen. And I don't even deal in AI, so no, nothing that I'm going to put out has anything to do with AI or uh has AI even 1% involved in it. Every reel you're going to see from me is no pun intended, real. Okay? 100%. These places are there, they exist. I'm not misleading anyone. Okay? These comments, you would be amazed. You have some people that say, thanks for thanks for blowing up my spot. Now it's gonna be packed, asshole, all for some stupid content. What? Your place? I didn't know. Is your name on the lease? Do you own the building? Do you own the bar? Last time I checked, you're probably just an asshole, not realizing that businesses, well, they need foot traffic and patrons in order to succeed. That's all I'm doing. I'm generating some business for some local companies to be able to keep their doors open. Okay? Now, I wouldn't have gotten a call from the owner of the first place that I went to and created a reel for if he didn't appreciate what I did. He thanked me up and down. It was awesome to hear. I was super grateful for the fact that he did that because he didn't have to do that. He didn't have to reach out to me. This guy owns multiple restaurants. The fact that he took his time to say, hey, reach out to this guy. I want to talk to him. Thank me. Tell me next time I'm out there that drinks and dinner are on the house, like that I don't even need anything like that. I'm doing this strictly for myself because I have a great time doing it, and for the people that are out there who enjoy the content. So for the people that are out there that enjoy the content, thank you. Thank you for the comments, the kind comments, even the questions. Like I said, the questions, you're gonna get them, and I'm gonna answer as many of them as I can. Sometimes I just can't get to them. So you might have to go online yourself, do a little bit of the hard work, figure out the hours, figure out if they serve drinks, how to make reservations. I mean, you wouldn't believe how many people ask me about fire exits and handicapped bathrooms. I I think a lot of people think that I work for the business. And given the content that I'm putting out there, I can kind of see why. Because it's not some cheap, knockoff, dumb reel. I'm taking my it takes me hours to create these reels, but I'm doing it simply because I enjoy doing it. I have fun. I have fun creating it, I have fun putting it out there, I have fun interacting with the people, uh, with the listeners that I have on my podcast, with uh new people out there that are now following me on social media, I have gained thousands of followers off of these hidden speakeasies. And yes, that is cool. We have something in common and they enjoy the content that I'm putting out there. And I promise, if if any of you are ones who have started recently following me on social media or are listening to this podcast for the first time, thank you so much for being involved in what I'm doing. Again, I would be doing this if I had one listener or one billion, because I enjoy sitting in here doing exactly this, talking about stuff that I'm passionate about and I care about, and that will never stop. No matter if people want to try to bring me down or if people are gonna do nothing but lift me up, and let me tell you, that'll never happen. Okay? You will never have the world where people just lift each other up, especially in social media. Social media can be a very, very toxic place. That was my biggest fear when I started this podcast was putting myself out there to be judged, putting myself out there to be hated. But ultimately, in the end, if you care about your product and you care about what you're putting out there, that's gonna that's gonna just outpace everything else. You're gonna do it, you're gonna keep getting better at it, and then hopefully the people that are out there will start to listen to you and you will start to gather a following of people that enjoy your content. And right now, I'm still a nobody. I don't have like all these tons and tons of followers. I'm starting to grow, and now I have a little bit of something that I can grab on to and run with. I love this, I love it, and I'm only going to put more stuff out about these speakeasies. I have so many that I'm gonna be going to, whether they're in the state of Michigan, whether they're out of state. I have speakeasies in Vegas that I still have to go to and get content. I want to show everybody out there the cool places that are hidden that you might not even know exist. That way you and your friends can be involved. You and your friends can plan a night out, the family go to these places, have a cocktail, support small local businesses, and just have

VIP Invites And Future Collaborations

SPEAKER_00

fun. I actually have a VIP invitation to a new speakeasy that's gonna be opening in downtown Detroit. Uh, they they messaged me and said, hey, uh, we're gonna be doing what is called a soft opening, and you're invited to come. You're allowed to come in, you're allowed to uh film some content. They want to generate some hype for this new speakeasy, hidden speakeasy in downtown Detroit that's gonna be opening, I want to say, probably around September. And I am absolutely thrilled that this is even occurring. I get to go to this place before it opens to the public and get some really cool content and put it out there and generate some hype for a business. And I really do hope, I mean, I'd be lying if I said that I hope that this can move forward into something even more lucrative. You know, I never thought in a million years that I'd be good at at doing reels, putting them out there, being type of advertiser for businesses or companies in order to generate that foot traffic, in order to generate that hype. I knew that I'm passionate about movies and films, and I could just tell somebody, man, this movie's so good, you need to go see it. This is why it's Good. That is why it's good. Go give it a shot. And people would go see it. So I don't know why I didn't really think that I'd be necessarily good at this, also, but it was never in my wheelhouse me being on social media and creating these reels.

Woodward Cinema And Bigger Media Plans

SPEAKER_00

I was not a social media individual. And I'm not a social media individual personally. I use social media to push my podcast and also push what I'm doing outside of my podcast, which is Woodward Cinema, which is a part of Woodward Sports. And if you haven't subscribed to Woodward Cinema on YouTube, I would really appreciate it if you did that as well. That's another one of my babies that I am starting with Woodward Sports. It is a sub-channel called Woodward Cinema, where we do everything, entertainment, and movies. And it is it is awesome. I'm having a blast with everyone over there at Woodward Cinema. I actually have a meeting with a president of box office operations for one of the major theater chains this week. And I'm going to be sitting down and talking to him about getting certain types of access so I can create content when it comes to uh movies, movie releases, the movie reviews that I do for Woodward Cinema and for my podcast. This is such an exciting time, and it's such an exciting time because not only do I finally have my feet on the ground running in a direction that I know I can succeed in, which I know I'm gonna run into a brick wall at some point in time, but you better believe I'm gonna bust right through that bitch. I'm going right through it. Nothing's going to stop me with what I'm doing right now. It won't happen. I am too driven, I am too ready, I am too prepared. I've been waiting for something like this my whole life. And this is where it's at. So I'm going to take the torch and I'm going to run with it. Now, thank you to every single one of you that have uh listened to my podcast from the beginning, that may be new to the podcast, that might go to Woodward Cinema and give a subscription on YouTube. To every single one of you, I cannot thank you enough. And at the end of all my podcasts, I always say I love you guys, and that is not a false statement. Because even though I may be doing this without any listeners, because it's what I enjoy doing, when I have listeners, it's that much more fun and that much more badass. The people, the reach that I can have. It just generates so much hype in my life, and it makes me feel so good. So thank you to everyone out there. Now, again, I'm gonna be going to some more speakeasies. I'm gonna be putting out more reels, and the fact that these posts have just exploded online is something I never thought would ever happen, and I appreciate all of the support and all of the love. Now, I did want to get into some of these comments. You're gonna you're gonna find a lot of these funny. Uh I hate comments, they generate traffic too. Sometimes the hate comments generate more traffic than the nice comments. Depending on how much hate is in the comments, sometimes I just hide that shit. You're not gonna be going into my comments spreading some wild uh misinformation or just literally being as hateful as possible and think that your your comments are gonna remain on my page. Um I'm not here for that, and neither are the people that listen or follow me on social media. They don't want to see that shit either. So you can take that and shove those comments right up your ass, okay? Because that's not gonna be that's not gonna be happening on my page. Now, Instagram hides some of the things themselves and Facebook. It's actually surprising when they sense that there's some hate speech or when there's a bunch of cussing, or I don't know how their their algorithm really does it, but they actually hide comments on their own, and I have to go through and unhide them if I feel like they're they're not that bad, which I've done a ton of.

The Algorithm And “Cooking With Gas”

SPEAKER_00

Uh and another thing is the algorithm. Uh I don't know why exactly this podcast, or I should say, this content of the speakeasies has just jumped into the stratosphere. These last two posts, I I would think that it has to do with the fact that I'm I'm I'm from the Detroit area in Michigan. I am going to Michigan speakeasies. Uh I do think it has a little bit to do with my name of my podcast as well. That might be pulling the wool a little bit. When I named my podcast cooking with gas, it wasn't because I'm cooking food with gas or charcoal or anything else for that matter. I enjoy food like everybody else. But cooking with gas is a play on words about moving quick, moving fast, and getting things done. And it was about straight shooting people. I'm gonna be cooking with gas on this podcast. I'm gonna give you guys content, I'm gonna tell you exactly how I feel. And if you like it, you like it. If you don't, you can move on. That's what cooking with gas is. But I do feel the algorithm feels that now, since I'm posting like restaurant things uh or uh speakeasy or bar things, that my name, cooking with gas, also has to do with like possibly food and it's pushing it out to that much more people. Uh, if that's the case, hey, it is what it is, because now I'm kind of in that game a little bit, so it works. But it was never my intention to have anything like that happen. And if you're gonna try to understand an algorithm, it it's not it's not going to happen. Okay, it's like it's like trying to understand a woman. Like you're you're you're never going to understand the algorithm and how it works. And when I talk to people who are even more involved in the social media industry or are much bigger than I am on social media, they always say just post, post and post, and something is going to stick, and at that time you're gonna know what the algorithm likes and doesn't like. Now I got these things that have been sticking, and they are generating hundreds of thousands, close to a million views. I uh the likes, the comments are off the chart, and it is awesome to see. But truthfully, I still don't understand the algorithm because I can put something else out, which I'm sure I'm going to do, and there's probably gonna be much less people that see it. What I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna continue to keep pushing this content. I'm gonna continue to do what I enjoy and having fun. And I hope you all out there come along with me for the ride because this is going to be something that is just going to get better, better, and funner and funner as I continue

Reading Hate Comments Then Ending Positive

SPEAKER_00

to do it. Now, here's some of these comments that I get from people, and it might seem repetitive. And to be honest, it they might be a lot of bots. I don't know uh Instagram all that much. I do know when it comes to X, they say that there's more bots on X than actual human beings. And and that could possibly be what's going on here. I get a lot of bots, a lot of bots, robots hating me. I don't know, I didn't do anything to them, but hey, whatever. So here's some of the comments that I get on on my posts. Not a hidden gem anymore, asshole. Do you understand the word hidden? It means not many people know about it. Great, now I'm gonna have content creators coming into my speakeasies. So this is his speakeasy. My speakeasy, he says. Nobody else is allowed in here. Just that guy. What a fucking clown. Not hidden anymore. Nope, no longer hidden. I guess hidden means putting it out there on Instagram for everyone to know about it. Man, you're an asshole. Who posts this stuff? Great. Now I'm gonna have to sit next to some idiot creators while I'm at my speakeasy. Another guy who is at his speakeasy. It's his. Okay? Like he is the only reason that that speakeasy exists. The fucking entitlement that these people have is it's absolutely one of the wildest things that I can try to comprehend. I mean, I wish that I can strap these people to an Acme rocket and shoot 'em just straight off into outer space. And now instead of ending it on a note of assholes, I'm gonna end it on a good note, which is most of the people absolutely love this content. They love it. I get comments that are, man, this is lit AF. Uh, hell yeah, I'm going here. Um, you wouldn't believe how many people literally live in this area. They say they live like a block away from these places, and they had no idea that these places exist. They have no idea that these speakeasies are even there, and they're planning a night out with their friends or their family in order to go there. Bring this place some business. Have a little fun with friends and family. You know, and that again is what I'm here for. So I could go on all day about the good and the bad and how these people um are either enjoying it or not enjoying it. All I know is I'm enjoying it. I'm having a blast doing it. I'm gonna find you guys all of the coolest places, whether they're hidden speakeasies, restaurants, or anything else. I have uh there is a whole different place that's opening up in Detroit real soon. And trust me, I'm going to be getting mad, mad content from this place. A lot of people don't even know that this place is existing and it's about to be opening, and it is going to change entertainment and sports forever in the state of Michigan and especially the city of Detroit.
